The restoration and adaptive reuse of Cairnwood was undertaken by The Academy of The New Church to serve as a venue for private and quasi-public social and retreat events. The work included a feasibility study that explored various reuse scenarios for the 17,000 SF mansion, restoration of the masonry facades, replacement of the slate and copper roofing systems, complete interior restoration consisting of decorative plaster, woodwork and high-quality finishes throughout with sensitive integration of new mechanical, electrical and fire protection systems, applications for current life-safety codes and physically-challenged accommodations. “Cairnwood” was designed by Carrere & Hastings in 1892 and completed in 1895 as the home for industrialist John Pitcairn in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania and is designated a National Historic Landmark. |
